Over the past few weeks Will and I have been making a lot of effort to ditch a lot of our possessions. Over the past few years together we have done this periodically, but we have also spent a great deal of time bimbling around charity shops & car boots which has meant that we have a lot if really nice, really useful things, but also a lot of things from our past lives before we were living together that are no longer that relevant but which we've held onto (over 4 house moves out of sentimentality)
We are doing this now because we are thinking about moving in the nearish future, and don't want to be lumbered with so much stuff in a new space when we're trying to travel towards a simpler life. So in a slightly preemptive move we have also started packing our things into boxes (which is a great time to decide whether you really want something or not)
There will still be far too much stuff at the end, but it's a start, and we've certainly been making the most of the fabulous freecycle (and our front doorstep) for whisking things away into the universe.
I think when Ivy is a little bigger and isn't always dangling off my boob I would like to set myself a challenge to count my possessions (books, clothes) and remove 25%, 30% 50%... and not stop until it's done as a way to be properly ruthless.
Ivy is getting properly big now (... to me, 9 weeks yesterday!) and I think we have just about found a bit of routine and rhythm. She still doesn't really nap (don't believe a word they say in antenatal classes!) so my day is very busy and carefully timed, but we get things done just about.
I have started working as of this week, 10 hours a week from home, with Ivy draped about me, in an effort to rack up our savings a bit. I'm only 3 days in, but although difficult has been manageable so far, and has forced me to get up and about and doing stuff in the morning, so I feel I am getting more done generally as well. Tiring though.
I have started making my first ever grown-up patchwork (not just hurriedly stitching scraps together higgledy piggledy) as I have so many scraps of fabric and want to make as best use I can of it with no waste. I am trying to hand-sew a little here and there while Ivy is feeding (no mean feat) and hopefully I'll end up with a bit of a stash so it's there when I need it.
Most of the time we are just enjoying Ivy and enjoying Autumn, which is truly here now. I don't see any foraging this year - who has the time? - but hopefully next year in our new surroundings...
